Job Description: The Kittitas Environmental Education Network (KEEN) seeks a part-time instructor to facilitate outdoor learning experiences for local elementary and middle school students at KEEN’s Science in the Parks program.
This position is for 10-weeks, 20-hours per week at $14/hour. Work hours will be between 10am-2pm during the week in Ellensburg. Spanish language proficiency required.
Background: Friends in Service to Humanity (FISH) implements OSPI’s Summer Food Service Program in Kittitas County. FISH provides free lunches for children up to the age of 18 in four community parks. KEEN will increase participation in the lunch program while providing outdoor education. Once a week, children will be invited to explore the natural features of the parks with guided questions and resources from KEEN staff and volunteers.
An example of a Science in the Parks program might include children investigating whether the same insects live in fast and slow areas of the stream, and whether the same plants grow in the shade of Ponderosa trees and in open areas. Over the summer, children’s curiosity about nature and comfort with scientific inquiry will increase. KEEN expects to work with 182 children a week for 10 weeks.
The instructor will work closely with KEEN’s Environmental Education Director to implement selected lessons throughout the summer.
Applicants should have an interest in education, outdoor learning, and working with children of different ages. Candidates should also be prepared for vigorous outdoor activity during the hot summers of the Central Washington climate. Applicants must have a proficiency in Spanish language.
